The VSA Art Center began 11 years ago in response
to individuals who indicated that they were looking for a place where they
could be involved
in arts programs, meet new people and share in the artistic process with
others. Last year, nearly 400 people participated in music, dance, drama,
ceramics, painting and drawing classes at the Art Center.

Clay for All with Mikel
Kelley
Mondays Sept. 22-Dec. 1· 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
This favorite is back for the fall semester, and the world of clay is
all yours! Handbuild your own ceramic sculpture, explore new ways to create and
learn the art of glazing. You can even take a turn on the wheel, and find your
center! Open to beginners and advanced students.
Creative Drumming & Dance
with Lori Seine
Mondays, Sept. 22-Dec. 1 · 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.
West African drums and dance come to you in this fun, interactive class! Create
your own songs, play drums, and dance to the rhythms from a world away! This
class offers you a chance to shine!

So many opportunities for your artistic ideas to take shape in this
creative, dynamic class focused on fabric arts! Stretch, layer, sew, and sculpt

Fall 2008 Arts Fundamentals | $105
Learn to draw, paint and create ceramic sculptures in these new 1½-hour
studio classes. Building upon your natural talents and interests, VSA’s
professional teaching artists will demonstrate specific techniques to support
the growth of your artistic skills. Classes are open to beginning and advanced
students.
Ceramics 101 with Mikel Kelley
Mondays, Sept. 22-Dec. 1 (no class Nov. 24; 4:00 – 5:30
p.m.
Learn how to create a sculpture from natural clay with specific instruction
in handbuilding, slab, coil, wheel throwing and glazing techniques. Enjoy studio
time to practice your new skills and receive individual instruction.

Drawing/Painting with Lou Ann E. Petersen
Wednesdays, Sept. 24-Dec. 3, no class Nov. 26; 4:00-5:30 p.m.
Learn how to draw and paint with a wide array of techniques and materials! VSA
Teaching Artist will provide specific instruction and facilitate studio time
to practice your new skills. Class members will explore various painting and
drawing elements and skills, including line, texture, shape and color.

Open Doors Studio | $105
with Lou Ann E. Petersen
Thursdays, Sept.
25-Dec. 4 (no class Nov. 27)
This two-semester* drawing and painting program offers
opportunity for artistic freedom within a studio atmosphere. Program includes
sales opportunities and participation in Spring 2009 public art exhibition.
Prerequisites: Past participation in at least one VSA visual arts class and
instructor approval; call Art Center at 608-241-7583 for preapproval.
*Participants are strongly encouraged to participate in both semesters
(Fall 2008 and Spring 2009) of Open Doors Studio. Each semester is
$105.

ArtSPARKS
Open to adults with and without
disabilities
A one-day arts immersion featuring
two art workshops. Participate in a visual arts project from beginning to end
and join in the endless variety of musical possibilities. A half hour break is
scheduled between sessions to allow for lunch or snack. (Food is to be provided
by the individuals or group attending.) Come as a group or on your own.
Fee: $6 per participant.
The VSA Art Center can design a program
to meet the needs of most groups; call the Art Center at 608-241-7583 for more
information.

Meet
our Instructors
Edie Baran earned
a bachelor's degree in theatre education from UW-Madison and has more than
15 years experience developing and conducting drama education programs for
children and adults. Edie has worked with VSA arts of Wisconsin since 2000.
Maggie Boggess is an art educator at
Wisconsin Heights High School and a visual artist. She was one of the art professionals
who juried
VSA’s annual Call for Art in 2007.
Ashly
Bintzler is
an art therapy intern from Edgewood College. She has volunteered for various
VSA programs.
Anna
Caflisch is a music therapy intern at Central Wisconsin Center. She is
working on a music therapy equivalency degree from the University of Iowa and
has completed a degree in french horn performance from West Virginia University.
Young-Ha
Chin is a music therapy intern at Central Wisconsin Center. Originally
from South Korea, she is a graduate of Michigan State University. Young-ha was
a volunteer at the VSA Art Center during summer 2006.
Suzanne
DuChateau earned bachelors degrees in art-graphic design and art education.
She has designed curriculum and directed programs in fine art for The VSA Art
Center.

Mary
Gorman’s dance instruction includes ballroom, folk and basic movement
classes. She has taught classes for The Memorial Union dance programs and
the
VSA Art Center. Mary (pictured right in VSA T-shirt) holds a teaching certificate
and bachelor of arts degree.
Top Carrie
Ingebritsen (pictured left holding guitar) has experience working with
varied adult populations and holds a B.M. degree in music therapy. She incorporates
a wide array of musical experiences and instruments into her work, with a focus
on guitar and dulcimer.
Mikel
Kelley (below, left) has led several VSA visual art programs for both
children and adults. He holds a master of fine arts in art and his area of expertise
is ceramics. Top
Joseph
LaCrosse earned a bachelor of arts from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh
with emphasis in both Graphic Communications and Painting. His areas of expertise
in studio art include drawing, oil painting and watercolor. Joe has also been
a volunteer for Art Center programs.
The
members of the Madison Symphony Orchestra’s (MSO) Hunt
String Quartet perform and study music as graduate students at the University
of Wisconsin School of Music and participate in the MSO’s nationally recognized
school-based residency program “Up Close and Musical,” which reaches
2000 students each year.
Hailey
Neises holds a degree in art therapy from Edgewood College. She has led
several VSA programs and has been teaching classes locally.
Austin Ohm has
a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Peck School of the Arts at University
of Milwaukee. He has a background in graphic design and experience teaching
community art classes. Lou Ann E. Petersen holds
a master of fine arts degree. She has led many visual art programs for VSA,
including several classes at the Art Center. Her areas of expertise are mixed
media and painting.
Elizabeth
Primozic is
a professional fiber artist and art instructor. She has studied art since
1976 and has several years experience teaching art workshops for children
and adults.
Jennifer
Rae earned a bachelor of arts degree in music therapy from Alverno
College, and is board certified with more than 10 years experience providing
music sessions for children and adults.

Holly
Reif (pictured left holding a guitar for a participant) holds a bachelors
degree in music therapy. She directs the VSA Choir in Stoughton and was involved
in
VSA
programming
in
central
Wisconsin
before moving to Madison.
Jody
Reiss holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in drama. She has led a number
of VSA drama classes for children and adults. Jody has also been involved in several
local and national theater productions.
Jennifer
Retzlaff has a bachelors degree in textile science; she has conducted
several classes at the VSA Art Center. Jennifer's artwork focuses on abstractions
of nature through the use of pastels.
Marcia
Schenkel earned a bachelors degree in art and art education from the
University
of Wisconsin – Madison and a masters degree from Naropa University. She
taught art in Seattle, Wash., for several years, and recently returned to Madison.

Lori Sene teaches
traditional West African drum, dance, song and culture through Madison School
and Community Recreation. She performs in the Atimevu Drum and Dance Company
and specializes in traditional drum and dance from Mali, Guinea and Senegal,
West Africa.
Melissa
Sommers is a music therapy intern at Central Wisconsin Center. She is
a graduate of UW-Eau Claire and is a former member of the VSA Eau Claire Choir.
Sonia
Valle (left) was born in Jamaica and now teaches art in a local elementary
school. She is a member of the group Goongoo Peas, regularly performing both
locally
and regionally. Sonia conducts programs for the VSA Art Center and VSA Early
Childhood Healthy Foundations initiative.
Angela
Waldoch
is completing her bachelor of arts degree in art therapy at Edgewood College,
and has been accepted into a Masters of Art Therapy program for next year.
She has expertise in visual arts and a love of watercolor painting.

Please review for changes and additions! - Registration
is on a first come, first served basis. Space is limited! Sign up early to
increase your chances of getting the class you want!
- *NEW* Classes may no
longer be reserved by phone! Your registration form secures your place
in class! Payment may be sent separately, if necessary.
Always include class registration information with payment.
- A complete
refund or credit toward another class is given if notice of cancellation
is received in the VSA office by the registration deadline.
- Classes will
be cancelled if minimum enrollment is not met by the start of the session.
- Class
confirmation postcards will be sent approximately one week before class
begins.
- Please schedule transportation for EXACT TIME AND DATES of classes!
Participants should arrive no more than 15 minutes prior to class
and should arrange
transportation for the EXACT time classes are scheduled to end.
**If transportation arrives more than 30 minutes after classes are
scheduled to end, class participants will be charged $10 for every
additional half-hour
(31 minutes after = $10; 61 minutes after = $20).**
- *NEW* For the
benefit of others, participants should not attend class if experiencing
significant coughing or other symptoms due
to cold/virus.
- *NEW* Participants may ONLY attend classes for
which they are registered.
- The VSA Art Center is located in a smoke-free
building including restrooms and common areas.
- INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY: Please use your best judgement when determining
class attendance during inclement weather. Class will be cancelled when Madison
schools close due to weather. You will be notified if classes are cancelled
for other circumstances.
