The
VSA Choir program was initiated in 1988 with the VSA Choir of Madison.
There were
six participants the first year and now more than 40 members make
up the VSA Choir of Madison. Today, VSA has 12 choirs statewide with nearly
400 members and 60 volunteers.
VSA Choirs fill a need for quality leisure
time activities for individuals with disabilities and also provide valuable opportunities
for social interaction between people with and without disabilities. New skills
are learned and friendships are formed. The
VSA Choir program provides ongoing music experiences that focus on individual
strengths and talents rather than disabilities. The choirs meet and perform regularly
and are directed by music therapists, who use adaptive teaching techniques to
help participants develop their musical skills. Singers learn about pitch, tone,
rhythm and movement, and gain self-confidence through public performance opportunities. The
statewide choir program is made possible in part through funding provided by American
Family Insurance.
